According to a confidential intelligence study recently handed to the White House and senior members of Congress, the US Energy Department has decided that the Covid epidemic was most likely caused by a laboratory leak.

The Energy Department’s move is highlighted in an update to a 2021 document by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines’ office, which was previously unsure on how the virus emerged.

The new assessment emphasizes how different sectors of the intelligence community have reached varied conclusions regarding the origins of the epidemic.

The Energy Department has now joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in claiming that the virus was most likely disseminated by an error at a Chinese laboratory.

Four additional agencies, as well as a national intelligence body, continue to believe it was the case.

The judgment reached by the Energy Department is the product of fresh intelligence, and it is noteworthy since the department has great scientific knowledge and administers a network of US national laboratories, some of which undertake sophisticated biological research.

The FBI previously concluded with moderate confidence that the pandemic in 2021 was most likely the product of a lab breach and continues to retain this position.

The FBI has a team of microbiologists, immunologists, and other scientists on staff.

Officials in the United States declined to comment on the new intelligence and analysis that prompted the Energy Department to modify its position.
