On Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced his selection of a former federal and international war crimes prosecutor to supervise ongoing Justice Department investigations against former President Donald Trump

Jack Smith, who previously directed the Justice Department’s branch investigating public corruption and has been the lead prosecutor at The Hague prosecuting war crimes in Kosovo since 2018, will now officially be the third special counsel to investigate allegations of misconduct and criminality against former President Trump in five years.

Smith will ultimately be responsible for determining if and when any criminal charges are brought against former President Trump.

He will now direct both the investigation into the handling of allegedly secret information at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida as well as major portions of the Justice Department’s investigation into Mr. Trump and his associates’ apparent efforts to reverse his 2020 election defeat.

The announcement comes just three days after Mr. Trump declared his presidential candidacy at his Florida estate.

The announcement received mixed reactions on social media with some conservatives criticizing the decision as another chapter in what they believe to be a politically motivated witch-hunt against the former president.

Meanwhile some liberals also weren’t happy with the announcement, viewing it as a betrayal by Garland, and yet another instance of what they believe is can kicking from the administration when it comes to indicting Trump.
