A former lawyer who used a Molotov cocktail to attack and set fire to an NYPD police car during a George Floyd demonstration in Brooklyn in the summer of 2020 has now been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The sentence was a far cry from the potential 10 year sentence prosecutors she might have received without a plea deal.
Before handing down the 15-month sentence, Brooklyn federal court Judge Brian Cogan chastised Urooj Rahman, calling the firebombing a “assault on the rule of law.”
Rahman pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit arson in connection with the firebombing of a police vehicle outside the 88th Precinct station house in Fort Greene on May 29, 2020.
The plea agreement stated that federal prosecutors would only seek a maximum two-year prison term for Rahman.
As protests over the death of George Floyd raged on the streets of Brooklyn that night, Rahman and fellow liberal lawyer Colinford Mattis hurled a Motolov cocktail at an unoccupied police cruiser.
Prosecutors showed a series of text messages exchanged between Rahman and Mattis at a hearing in 2021, suggesting the duo talked and bragged about burning down police headquarters and courts over roughly a 24-hour period.
Rahman originally hailed from Pakistan before coming to the United States and eventually to Fordham Law School, where she received her degree.
