On Wednesday, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) declared his campaign to become the next House majority leader, as the GOP appeared to be heading for a small majority in the lower chamber in spite of surprising Democratic strength at the polls.
He claimed to have a track record of bringing diverse opinions in the GOP together to achieve consensus, citing conservative legislative accomplishments like as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Scalise also emphasized the Republican caucus remaining absolutely united in opposition to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act.
His current duty as whip is to persuade Republican House members to vote for or against legislation.
Scalise stated that he intends to use House committees to implement “our strong, conservative agenda.”
Scalise has also stated his desire to establish a legislative process based on “regular order” and member involvement.
He also stated that he wants to stop proxy voting and institute an ordered schedule so that members know when they should expect to be in Washington, D.C., and in their districts.
Scalise’s announcement is an open challenge to current House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who many observers have been blaming for the GOP’s major underperformance in the midterm elections.

We need new blood in Republican leadership. We need things to actually get done when we have the gavel and not just lip service.
Steve Scalice is an excellent choice for Speaker of the House. His commonsense, persuasive approach to problems and enhancements to the House embraces both parties and is needed during this time of divisiveness to represent “we the people.”
