San Francisco Launches New Guaranteed Income Program Exclusively for Transgender Individuals

The city of San Francisco has now launched a new guaranteed income program, but only transgender individuals are allowed to qualify for it.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on Wednesday that the program will offer low-income transgender persons with monthly payments of up to $1,200 for up to 18 months.

“We know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to lift individuals in this community up. We will keep building on programs like this to provide those in the greatest need with the financial resources and services to help them thrive,” Breed claimed in a statement.

Guaranteed Income for Transgender Individuals (G.I.F.T.) will give unrestricted, monthly guaranteed income to “economically excluded transgender people.”

According to the program’s website, the following demographics will be prioritized for enrollment:

“…transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex people who are also Black, indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC), experiencing homelessness” in addition to those “living with disabilities and chronic illnesses, youth and elders, monolingual Spanish-speakers, and those who are legally vulnerable such as TGI people who are undocumented, engaging in survival sex trades, ​or are formerly incarcerated.”

The program will reportedly being by providing assistance to 55 persons.

According to the publication, participants also will receive gender-affirming medical and mental health treatment, among other advantages.
